What To–and Where To Read This Summer

Posted on: July 6, 2022

Reading is always in season, but Summer is the best time to dive into something lighter, full of fun, or a departure from your normal fare!  While Winter was all about the reading nook this is the season to take your book outdoors!  Let the sun illuminate the words.  Below are my top picks by category for your summer reading list.  Much like, Dolly Parton I try to read a book a week, I’m hoping to have read many of these in the coming weeks.

Humour

Happy-Go-Lucky by David Sedaris
Sedaris is always ready with the wit so look for his latest to deliver!

Graphic Novel

Heart Stopper by Alice Oseman
With a popular Netflix adaption, this is the perfect pre or post-show accompaniment.

Biography

We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story by Simu Liu
Following up on Liu’s big hits, Kim’s Convenience and Shang Chi this book will provide insight into everything that went into his journey to the top.

Whodunit

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray
For the fans of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice AND Agatha Christie mysteries, this is for you!

Picture Book

In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek
This is the perfect book for the little ones just learning to name and talk about all their emotions.

A Departure From My Normal Fare

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey Mcquiston
I’m trusting the good people at Coles who have recommended this author’s previous books to me, . . . and I’ve never followed through. This is my chance to redeem myself as well as to not judge a book by its cover.

With chosen book in hand, venture forth into the great vast world and get lost in the page.  See how many of the recommended reading places below you can check off before summer fades to fall!

Best places to read:

  • Beach
  • Park
  • Backyard
  • On a road trip
  • Under a tree
  • In a hammock
  • Poolside
  • Dockside
  • On a balcony
  • On a train

Fellow readers, stop by Coles to buy your copy of any (or all) of my Summer reading list, and make sure to tag @cloverdale, especially if you manage to enjoy reading in all my favourite places.
