Chocolate Easter Egg Sweet Spots

Posted on: March 15, 2024

Walking through Cloverdale and I noticed the variety of chocolate eggs on store shelves, and it hit me—Easter is on the way!

Mmmmmm . . . Chocolate—that decadent smooth mixture made from roasted and ground cacao seed kernels, normally mixed with sugar, an emulsifier and vanilla, processed to give a final product with a defined melt-in-the-mouth texture and surface shine.  So how did chocolate Easter eggs get so popular?  What is their origin story?

In the seventeenth and eighteenth century England, the manufacturing of egg shaped toys which were given to children at Easter was popular. Such as cardboard or papier-mâché eggs covered with silk, lace or velvet, in which they hid small gifts.  By the nineteenth century, the gifts gradually evolved into cardboard and satin eggs filled with chocolates and sweets.  Around 1873 when chocolate-making techniques began to improve, a company, J.S. Fry (later part of the Cadbury empire) produced the first chocolate Easter eggs in England, made of plain dark chocolate filled with sweets.  These first hollow chocolate eggs were laborious to produce as the moulds were pasted with chocolate a layer at a time.  Two years later, Swiss chocolatier, Daniel Peterlater created a recipe with dried milk, thus making milk chocolate!  Then, Cadbury’s produced the first Dairy Milk chocolate egg in 1905, making this new innovation of chocolate a phenomenal success and sales of Easter eggs increased enormously.
