Ryerson School of Urban and Regional Planning Studio Project

QuadReal partnered with Ryerson University’s School of Urban and Regional Planning as a ‘client’ for the Advanced Planning Studio class and utilized the redevelopment of Cloverdale Mall as the subject topic. The studio program involved twelve 3rd year Ryerson Planning Students that spent time in the Cloverdale Common completing research and analysis, culminating in a final report which was presented to QuadReal and graded by the school.

The studio group examined North American best practices to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with large-scale shopping mall redevelopment projects. Reference to land-use planning principles, city building approaches and real estate development objectives that are necessary to provide a proper context for this analysis. Mall redevelopment issues that were examined in this research include Innovative and sustainable mixed-use approaches, the strategic inclusion of retail land use, and the integration with the surrounding neighbourhood.
