What’s Poppin’?

Let’s be real, we all love to snack but it’s typically unhealthy snacking that leads us to break our commitment to a healthy diet.  Store bought snacks are usually loaded with preservatives, sodium, sugar and other unhealthy ingredients.  Popcorn is one of the healthiest snacks out there as it’s high in fibre, loaded with antioxidants and is low in calories, but the way you make popcorn makes all the difference.  Steer far away from the microwaveable kind you find at the grocery store.  They are full of chemicals and preservatives which we don’t want to put in our bodies.  Luckily, it’s simple to make your own popcorn at home so you know exactly what you are eating.  There are a variety of popcorn makers available at Kitchen Stuff Plus, from microwave to stovetop poppers.  I suggest the Cuisinart Popcorn Maker, as it can make up to 15 cups of fresh hot popcorn in under 3 minutes, perfect for when my husband and I have our Netflix binge watching nights.  Add salt and butter according to your own preference or try one of the yummy Wabash Valley Farms seasonings also available at Kitchen Stuff Plus, such as Sweet Caramel or Zesty Cheddar Cheese.  It’s also the perfect after school snack for the kids.  Keep the high doses of sugar that are in cookies and chips away from them and present them with a bowl of delicious popcorn.  If plain or seasoned popcorn is considered too boring then jazz up the popcorn with some pretzels, variety of nuts, dried cranberries and maybe a few M&M’s for your very own trail mix for the kiddos.  Ditch the chips and make air-popped popcorn your healthy go-to snack.
